New Level, New Devil: Why Growth Feels Hard (Even When You’re Ready)

New Level, New Devil: Why Growth Feels Hard (Even When You’re Ready)

Growth isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it’s messy, uncomfortable, and full of unexpected challenges even when you’re doing everything “right.”

If you’ve ever wondered why things feel harder right when you’re leveling up, this one’s for you.

In Episode 2 of the She Trusts Herself podcast, I talked about the concept of new level, new devil - the idea that every time you evolve, you meet a new challenge. I shared:

“You thought you had dealt with it… and then you move up to a new level and it resurfaces.”

This doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re growing.

When you step into a new version of yourself, old patterns, wounds, or beliefs often rise to the surface not to punish you, but to be cleared at a deeper level. Some old habits die hard and are layered (like onions) and bit by bit, you peel back the layers until there's nothing left.

How to Know You’re Leveling Up

1. You’re tired of your own excuses.

You reach a point where you think, I can’t keep doing this. In that moment, you can. It's powerful, it’s the catalyst for change.

2. You feel restless.

Not unhappy. Not lost. Just ready. Ready for more. Ready for something different. Ready to meet the next version of you.

3. You’ve survived the messy middle.

As I said in the episode:

“You’ve climbed the mountain peak… and you start wondering what’s next.”

That moment of clarity after chaos is a sign you’re stepping into a new level.

4. You’re being challenged in new ways.

Not because you’re doing something wrong or karma's out to get you, but because you’re expanding.

Why Some Levels Feel Harder Than Others

Some seasons of growth feel effortless. Others feel like they’re asking everything of you. It's the duality of life - to experience both.

The hard seasons are often the ones that shape you the most. They reveal your resilience, your strength, your capacity, and your desire.

And sometimes, the universe will test you, not in hopes of breaking you, but to prepare you for what you’re calling in.

Actionable Tips for Navigating a Level-Up

  • Pause before reacting: Give yourself space to respond, not spiral.
  • Name the challenge: Awareness reduces overwhelm.
  • Ask: What is this teaching me? Every level has a lesson.
  • Celebrate small wins: Progress is progress.
  • Let yourself rest: Rest is part of rising.
  • Ask for help: You don’t have to do every level alone.
